Since 1936, Rand McNally's Commercial Transportation division, at the direction of the Household Goods Carriers' Bureau, has published The Official Transportation Mileage Guide. This printed mileage guide established a uniform method of computing the shortest distance (in miles) between two points for motor carrier tariff purposes.

The Household Goods or "HHG" mileages derived from the Guide simplify rate negotiations, make it easier and faster to analyze freight rates, and streamline the audit process for over 75,000 transportation professionals throughout North America.

From 1980, the commercial trucking industry began using our MileMaker® software to deliver HHG mileages and routes, in addition to Rand McNally practical mileages and routes. Rand McNally's Commercial Transportation division was the first technology provider to offer practical routes to assist with dispatch, estimated travel times, back-haul movements, and fuel-tax calculations.

Building upon this legacy, IntelliRoute®'s suite of products was the first to introduce cost-based routing and integrated road construction updates.
